Section 504

Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 is a federal civil rights law that prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in any program or activity receiving federal financial assistance. In the school setting, Section 504 ensures that students with a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities are provided equal access to educational opportunities.

Eligible students, whether or not they receive special education services, may qualify for accommodations and modifications tailored to meet their individual needs. These supports are designed to provide access to a free and appropriate public education (FAPE) in the least restrictive environment. Once a school is made aware of a potential disability, a team will meet to determine the student’s eligibility under Section 504 and, if appropriate, develop a plan to support the student’s success within the school environment.
