"40 days and 40 nights: To most of us that is a clue to Biblical trivia and the account of Noah and the Ark. However, in today’s current events those numbers represent the legislative session now going on in Atlanta. Another thing these two items have in common? Stormy weather!

The topic that is drawing most of the attention under the Gold Dome is economics. How does the state make more money and how does it reduce its bills? These are the bottom line questions to be sure. Yet, these are not philosophical questions. They are real – very real – especially to those of us in education. When 56% of the state’s budget is comprised of pre-k through college education, you better believe that the cross hairs are squarely on those of us entrusted with the education of our students.

While a lot could be written about the many ways they will upset our local apple cart – and perhaps I will write some more on that later -- I want to focus on two very important points at this time. Point One: Everyone understands that the economy is in dire straits. Everyone should expect to be affected by the negative numbers we are getting used to. But there is one thing that seems to fly below the radar in terms of understanding, especially by the lawmakers. We are still expected to improve on the job we are doing as evidenced by test scores and other measures of accountability. In other words, educators are supposed to continue to rev up the graduation rates and the CRCT and GHSGT scores, but we are to do it with less money, fewer resources, lessened work days, and even a reduction in personnel. This is just another example of what we have grown to expect anymore: unfunded mandates. "continued
